How do I know for sure if I can get WisperTEL service?
One of the best ways to find out if you can get WisperTEL service is simply to order it. If our installer comes out to your property and cannot get service at your location, there is no charge to you for anything.
If you absolutely must have a site survey without an order (e.g. home purchase, new construction), WisperTEL charges $37.50.
Specifically, WisperTEL charges $37.50 for all Site Surveys except:
- When the Survey is combined with an Install during the same service call and
- When the Survey fails, unless the Survey is a return visit requested by the customer in which case the customer will pay $37.50 if it fails again.
What is Broadband?
Broadband Internet access is typically defined as having connection speeds of 200 Kbps or faster to the Internet. Examples of broadband technologies include Fixed-Wireless, DSL, Cable Modems & Satellite.
What is Fixed-Wireless?
This method of Internet connectivity is accomplished using low power Microwave radios to transfer the data over the airwaves, instead of current wired technologies. This technology is fast becoming the defacto standard in providing service to areas currently not served by conventional methods.
Is Fixed-Wireless the same as "satellite" Internet?
No, wireless broadband uses ground-based antennas to transmit data to your home or business, while satellite systems usually require you to use a phone line and modem to send data. Also, satellite systems have a high "latency" (the time it takes data to travel between 2 points) since the data has to travel from your location up to the satellite 23,500 miles away and back down again twice, making VPN's and gaming unreliable. The time delay is nearly a full second in satellite transmission. Our systems don't suffer from this delay.

How do I qualify for WisperTEL service?
To be eligible for our service, your location needs to receive adequate signal strength from one of our transmission antennas. A few things can affect the strength of your signal. Generally, your location needs to be within 10 miles of a WisperTEL Community Gateway or a WisperTEL Mountain Top Hub Site. Additionally, objects like trees, buildings and hills can affect your signal strength. Our support team will help you in determining if you are eligible by making a site visit.
How much does WisperTel's service cost?
WisperTEL offers a variety of packages to suit your needs and budget. Pricing varies depending on the package you choose. Click on the links below to see our available packages for residential and commercial services.

When can I get WisperTel's service installed?
Our installation team will schedule a time that is convenient for you. The installation generally takes less than 90 minutes and is completed within days of your order.
What kind of equipment is needed for WisperTel's service?
The standard residential installation will include a wireless subscriber unit, antenna cabling, and an indoor power unit. All you'll need to provide is a PC with a network card and we'll do the rest.
How fast will my connection be?
The equipment we use is manufactured to a standard that permits local data speeds of up to 9 Mbps. We have many service options to choose from, with speeds ranging from 768 Kbps to 9 Mbps
Is it secure?
The technologies we have chosen to use in our network have built in proprietary protocols and are highly secure. WisperTel's network management system only allows communications between radios from WisperTel's vendors which have been authenticated and approved. In addition, software encryption is employed on all data transfers. Off the shelf equipment is not capable of receiving our signals and therefore cannot be casually broken. Our signals are not 802.11 in any way.
Is the signal affected by the weather?
Theoretically no. However, a slight degradation in transmission rates may occur during periods of heavy snowfall, rain and very high winds that could pose the possibility of de-aligning antennas. Also, antennas buried in deep snow is a problem. Our engineers design with normal weather conditions in mind and alleviate any problems.
Do I need any special software?
We do not require you to install any new software. The only requirement is that your Operating System has a TCP/IP Stack installed (such as Windows 95 or above on a PC, or OS 7.5 or above on a Macintosh).
As a WisperTEL customer, will I need a separate Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
No. Wisper will be your full-service ISP, providing you with your high-speed connection to the Internet, e-mail, Webmail, web hosting and a variety of additional Web services that you may need such as static IP addresses, domain hosting, etc.
Can I hook up more than one computer to my WisperTEL connection?
Yes. WisperTel's service will support multiple computers. Additional equipment will probably be required such as an inexpensive DSL Router or switch. WisperTel-authorized LAN Agents are available to help.
Your service is Mac-compatible, isn't it?
Completely! We probably have 20% of our customers that are on a Mac. They are also as easy as windows or Unix to install.
What sort of firewall protection do you provide?
If you get a static IP address from us, we provide you no firewall. You're on your own. If you don't purchase a static IP you will get a NAT (Network Address Translation) address inside of the WisperTel network, you are secure from computers off the WisperTEL network, but it's still a great idea to have either a software firewall or a Cable/DSL router to protect yourself.
Do you provide any sort of SPAM filtering?
Yes. WisperTel uses Real time Black Hole spam filtering at the server. This doesn't block every spam, but it really cuts down on it. We are exploring other alternatives all the time and will implement a system if we find one that works better.
Does WisperTel use a modem?
No, the electronics are contained within the WisperTel antenna unit. What comes into your house is an industry standard Ethernet cable (about the size of telephone cable) that plugs into a miniature power injector that is used to power the antenna unit. From there it's just an Ethernet cable that goes from the injector to your computer or switch or router. Please note that your computer must have a 10/100 Ethernet (network) port installed.
I use a VPN connection to work from home, is WisperTel compatible?
Yes, because of the high speed and low latency WisperTel will work with most any VPN. You may or may not require a static public IP address ($5/mo. option on residential accounts)--check with your I.T. administrator.
My homeowner's association will not allow outside antennas--how can I receive your service?
Under Federal law your homeowner's association cannot restrict your installation of antennas up to 1 meter (39") in diameter when used for "fixed wireless" services (including WisperTel. Please see http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html.
Will I get a new web browser and home page?
Unlike many internet service providers, WisperTel is not an entertainment and content provider. We put all of our resources into developing the highest quality network to get you to the internet fast. You can use any web browser you wish (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, etc.), and everything those entertainment providers offer is already available for you to begin with. Just use a search engine like www.google.com, www.yahoo.com, etc.
Can I keep my existing email address?
Sure, but if you are paying for it now or it is associated with a service you are currently paying for you will probably have to continue paying for it. You can easily access and use your existing account from the WisperTel network.
I would like to wire multiple rooms in my house for WisperTel.
On a time available basis the WisperTel technician can run extra cabling for $100/hour, however we will not connect multiple computers. We can refer you to an agent who can assist with this, or you can do it yourself. See http://www.wispertel.com/networking/index.html for a discussion of home networking.
I requested service but the technician said the signal was too weak. Can I sign up for a slower speed anyway? I really need high speed internet!
Sorry, no. In order to assure the highest quality service WisperTel will not perform an installation unless it conforms to our standards.
I requested service and the technician said my neighbor's trees were blocking the signal, but there is clear signal at the end of my driveway. What can I do?
At your option you can install
(or have someone else install) a post in the clear
location, and we will return (for a $37.50 return
visit charge) to install your service on the pole.
We will then run cable to your residence (if within
300 feet), but you will be responsible for burying
the cable. Contact sales at 303-670-8400 x2 for more
information.
